UK text-based crisis service launched for pilots
Pilots in need of mental health support can text WePilots to 85258
UK charity PilotsTogether has launched a text-based crisis service for pilots to text if they are struggling to cope with mental health pressures.
The service is manned by volunteers and is provided in partnership with Shout 85258, a UK-based text messaging service for people in need of immediate support.
Pilots can text WePilots to 85258 for professional and anonymous support on issues including anxiety, depression, and loneliness; issues that have been exacerbated through the Covid-19 pandemic.
Scott Bateman, Chairman of PilotsTogether, commented: “The impacts of Covid-19 are going to be with us for some time. Pilots, including those currently flying, those on furlough, and those who have been made redundant, continue to be affected by increased pressures through this challenging chapter.”
The mental health toll of the pandemic is becoming increasingly recognized. A survey conducted prior to the Emergency Services Show purported to reveal that blue light service employees are at greatest risk of experiencing mental health issue but are among the least likely to successfully address them.
