Facebook ban affects rescue services in Australia
In the wake of Facebook’s ban on sharing news in Australia, not-for-profit organizations such as RACQ Capricorn Rescue have been hit too
Facebook blocked Australian users from viewing news content on its platform, causing alarm over public access to information. The policy comes in response to a proposed law, which would make tech giants pay for news content on their platforms. The ripple effect has also been felt by not-for-profit organizations, including RACQ Capricorn Rescue, as the social media platform shuts down all not-for-profits pages in the process.
Facebook communication with community essential
On the 25th anniversary of the first rescue performed by the rescue service, it is a significant occasion in which to reflect on the monumental support shown by the Central Queensland community since the inception of the Service.
The service said: “As a lifesaving, community run not-for-profit, the significance of Facebook as a method of communication to the community is crucial to RACQ Capricorn Rescue. Relying on these channels of publication to inform the community and ask for support on community events and fundraising initiatives, the closure of the Service’s Facebook page is detrimental to the organization.”
