Medical and aviation quality assured
Thomas Redder, VP of International Sales at Spectrum Aeromed, explains how Spectrum Aeromed is being recognized for its innovation and diligence in the design of its products for the air ambulance industry with consideration for aviation safety and ergonomics at the core
Spectrum Aeromed has just been awarded CE Marking, on which products does this apply?
In addition to our oxygen system, the stretcher and patient loading system were both included in the CE Marking approval in accordance with European Union Medical Device Regulation (EU MDR).
What does CE Marking mean for Spectrum Aeromed’s products, and how does it demonstrate quality?
Spectrum Aeromed systems are typically certified according to aviation regulations. Achieving compliance to EU MDR forced us to take an additional point of view, emphasizing the patients’ and medical crew’s needs. It focused on the people involved in air ambulance missions, which is an additional quality compared with ‘only’ considering aviation safety elements.
Designed specifically for the Dassault Falcon 900, a common platform for air ambulances, are the devices able to be used on and applied across a range of air ambulance platforms?
Our systems have a modular design and can typically be used on several aircraft types. Currently, the initial systems will be installed and certified in the Falcon 900. Spectrum Aeromed has added processes to the AS9100 certification standards, already in use for almost 12 years, which allows us to expand and get more products compliant to the EU MDR easily in the future.
Beyond the CE Marking, what makes the stretcher solution, and the electric patient loader, its accessories and other products a ‘must have’ for air ambulance operators?
Since the beginning, we have always focused on getting modular designs that allow for necessary customization to meet customer operational requirements at a competitive price. This has resulted in reliable products that can quite often be used in different aircraft types. Incidentally, our CE Marking efforts benefit from this modular solution, since this certification is typically for a specific product part number.
What other products does Spectrum Aeromed produce and are any others in the process of getting CE Marking?
In addition to the stretcher, air ambulance systems and patient loaders, we also supply cabinets and mounting solutions for the most common medical devices used in patient transportation. With our experience and quality system update, Spectrum Aeromed is now able to easily provide CE Marking on mounts should the customer require it. Typically, this is achievable within the lead time of a project.
How else does Spectrum Aeromed support its customers?
Delivering turnkey solutions for our customers does not stop at our products We offer customers the full range of services, including integration and certification in aircraft; training for medical and technical crews; provision of medical devices; and even servicing of those devices at the customers’ own facilities globally. Only operating the systems needs to be done by the customer themselves!
